How do we know that our site is frequently visited by the U.S. military? How do we find out the precise dates and times of these visits?
We use http://summary.net to generate detailed reports on the traffic to and on our site. One of the statistics provided in these reports is called "Recent Visits," which lists in reverse chronological order the names of the servers or "hosts" that have visited our site, the date and time of each server's visit, the number of times that the server visited on that particular day, the number of hits on that particular day, and how much information was viewed in total.
The most important piece of information is of course the name of the "host" or visiting server. Though we are primarily on the look-out for servers that end in ".mil" (and are thus registered by the United States military), we also keep an eye out for servers that end in ".gov" (and are registered by the United States government). Because not all military or government visitors are from the United States, we also watch for servers that contain but don't end in "mil" or "gov".
Sometimes, the identity of the registrant of a .mil or .gov server will be self-evident: the server called webcache.elemendorf.af.mil is obviously registered by the Elmendorf ("elmendorf") Air Force ("af") Base, which is part of the U.S. military ("mil"). You can quickly double-check by treating elemendorf.af.mil as if it were a URL and trying to visit the website. But not all server names correspond with websites or, rather, with websites that can be viewed by the general public. Examples include wcs2.norfolk.nipr.mil and glock.leo.gov
To find out which precise military unit is located at the Elmendorf Air Force Base, the general location of the base itself, or the identity of a server that has a name that is difficult to figure out and/or doesn't correspond with a publicly accessible website , simply copy the phrase and paste it into the window provided by the kind folks at Geek Tools and hit the button labeled "look up." If nothing comes up, or if something does come up but it isn't sufficient information, you can do a Google search for either "Elmendorf Air Force Base" or "elemendorf.af.mil".
Other times, the identity of the registrant for a .mil or .gov server name will not be obvious: take , for example. bu-wcs3-sand.nipr.mil DECC San Diego (BWSNM3-HST) Building 1482 Room 169A Read Road North Island, CA gateway1.gsi.gov.uk
